
Why Your Child Hates Being Touched, Loud Noises and Scratchy Clothes (It Is Not Behaviour)
The tag in their shirt sends them into meltdown. A hug from grandma feels like an attack. The hand dryer in a public toilet ruins the entire trip out.
You are not imagining it. And they are not being dramatic.
If your child reacts this way to touch, sound or texture, their nervous system is not processing sensation the way most people's does. This is not a behaviour problem. It is a wiring problem. And once you understand what is actually happening, a lot of things start to make sense.
What Is Going On
Every second of every day, your child's brain receives thousands of signals from their body and the world around them. Touch, sound, movement, temperature, pressure. The brain's job is to sort those signals, decide which ones matter, and filter out the ones that do not.
In most people this happens automatically. Background noise stays in the background. A light touch on the shoulder registers and then fades. A scratchy fabric is a minor annoyance.
In children with sensory processing difficulties, the filter does not work properly. The brain cannot decide what is important and what is not. So everything comes through at the same volume. All at once. All the time.
Imagine trying to have a conversation in a room where every sound, from traffic to whispers to the hum of the fridge, is equally loud. You would not be able to focus. You would feel overwhelmed. You might lash out just to make it stop.
That is what your child is living with.
Why Some Children Are More Sensitive
The part of the brain responsible for sensory filtering sits deep in the brainstem. It is one of the earliest parts of the brain to develop. When that development is disrupted or incomplete, the filtering system does not mature properly.
This is often connected to retained primitive reflexes, the automatic movement patterns babies are born with that should fade in the first year of life. When those reflexes stay active past the point they should have integrated, the nervous system stays in a state of high alert. It treats ordinary sensation as a potential threat.
A child in that state is not overreacting. Their brain genuinely registered danger. The meltdown over the sock seam is not about the sock. It is about a nervous system that cannot tell the difference between something irritating and something harmful.
Why It Matters Over Time
Sensory sensitivity does not just affect comfort. It affects everything.
A child who cannot tolerate certain textures may refuse whole food groups. A child who cannot filter background noise cannot learn in a noisy classroom. A child who finds touch overwhelming pulls away from physical affection and struggles to connect.
Over time the nervous system learns to anticipate threat. The child starts avoiding situations before they even get there. School trips become impossible. Restaurants. Haircuts. Birthday parties. The world starts shrinking.
And because it looks like behaviour, the response is usually behaviour management. Sticker charts. Consequences. Encouragement to just try. None of it touches what is actually happening. The child gets the message that something is wrong with them, not their nervous system.
Why Your Child Hates Being Touched: What to Look For
Here is a simple way to start understanding your child's sensory profile.
Notice which senses they react to most strongly. Touch, sound, taste, smell, light and movement are the most common. Some children are oversensitive to one or two. Some react to all of them. Some swing between oversensitivity and actively craving intense input, like crashing into things or chewing everything they can find.
Watch for patterns. Does it get worse when they are tired or hungry? Does it improve in quieter, lower stimulus environments? Do they recover faster when they have had time outside or time to move?
These patterns tell you something about the state of their nervous system at any given moment. A child who is already dysregulated will have a much lower sensory threshold. The same sock that was fine on Monday destroys Tuesday.
Also notice what they seek out. Children who crave deep pressure, tight hugs, heavy blankets or chewing are often trying to self regulate. Their nervous system is looking for the kind of input that helps it calm down. That seeking behaviour is not random. It is the body trying to fix itself.
Small Things That Help Now
You cannot rewire the nervous system overnight. But you can reduce the load.
Removing scratchy labels, choosing seamless socks and soft fabrics is not giving in. It is reducing unnecessary stress on an already overloaded system. The same goes for noise. Ear defenders at loud events are not weakness. They are a reasonable accommodation for a real neurological difference.
Predictability helps too. Warning your child before you touch them, letting them know what is coming before a transition, giving them time to prepare for noisy or unfamiliar environments. These things do not fix the underlying issue but they reduce the number of times the alarm fires each day.
And fewer alarm responses means a calmer nervous system overall. That matters.
